At the 90th Academy Awards, in the Best Foreign Language category, “Newton” was India’s first entry in it officially. But Newton is no longer in the race to win the Oscars.
Amit Masurkar-directed black comedy is not a part of the nine-film lined up, to reach the next round of voting for the Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAAS) has announced.
The list of nine pictures that are a part of the nominations are “The Wound” (South Africa), “A Fantastic Woman” (Chile), “The Square” (Sweden), “The Insult” (Lebanon), Felicite (Senegal), “In the Fade” (Germany), “Loveless” (Russia), “On Body and Soul” (Hungary), and “Foxtrot” (Israel).
Featuring Rajkumar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi in key roles, the Hindi language film chronicles the foibles of democracy in the jungles of Chhattisgarh. Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23.
Till now, no Indian film has won an Oscar. The last movie that reached to top five on Oscar’s list was Lagaan directed by Ashutosh Gowariker in 2001. The movies that made it to the top five were Salaam Bombay” (1989) and Mother India (1958).
Director Vetrimaaran was India’s Tamil film, Visaranai was submitted officially to Oscars last year. In Los Angeles, the ceremony will be held on March 4.
