Uttarayan, the harvest season where Indians celebrate the day with vibrant and uniquely designed kites while relishing the taste buds with seasonal fruits, jalebi, undhiyu or chikki for the Gujarat state while other states like South is known to celebrate the harvest season as Pongal, the North Indians call it as Lohri while the Assamese celebrate it as Bihu. The harvest season is celebrated all over India with varied festive names, cultures and rituals while maintaining the same logic behind the welcoming 1st harvest season of the year.
A local from Chandkheda, Parvathi Srinivasan states that south Indians celebrate the harvest season as Pongal, which is a 5-day festive that starts from the day of “Makar Sankranti” while celebrating the first-day “Bogi” by lighting up the unused or discarded things and cleaning the house. South Indians also prepare “Chakkarai Pongal” to celebrate the auspicious day.
In a very similar manner, the community of Assamese enjoys the “Bihu” festive, which is generally celebrated on 13th of January known as “Bhongali Bihu” where there is a small get together of the villagers celebrating the harvest with season with new crops. A local from Bhopal who has nearly spent 60 years in Gujarat, Basant Kumar Borah states that every individual as per their necessity especially cooks delicacies made from rice and dessert like “Pitha”.
The Gujarat and Maharashtra state celebrates Uttarayan or “Makar Sankranti” by flying beautiful kites and preparing delicious sweet delicacies like “Poran Poli” and other Gujarati dishes. In Maharashtra, people also spread the sweetness by sharing the “Til Gudd” and bless the rest to spread sweetness the entire year. In the Northern states, the 1st harvest season is popularly known as “Lohri” The rituals are different than other states, the community comes together and lit a bonfire while get dressed in their traditional attire and worshipping the lord while spreading the joy with food and folk dance.
